 Biographical Sketch

I was born into a pastor's home, trusted Christ for salvation at age five, was influenced for full-time ministry at age 17 by R.J. Barber, Jr. at the Baptist Tabernacle in Danville, Virginia, then went on to college and seminary and to serve in useful ministry for about 15 years. However, somewhere along the way I missed learning the need to serve my wife and children. In 1983, while pastoring in West Virginia, my ministry and marriage failed. For several years, I was discouraged by my failure, but in time, I began to learn about the Father's heart for the marred vessel, that he does not throw it away, but makes it again another vessel according to his loving wisdom and in his own time. In 1990, I remarried, moved to Atlanta, went back to school, was enriched in my experience of Christ through the ministry of First Baptist Atlanta. In Atlanta, I taught The Early Morning Adult Sunday School Class at First Baptist for three years, and then in 2002, began GracePoint Counseling (now GraceRenewal Counseling) to provide support for learning how to read the Scripture in order to

  • experience Christ (in order to)
  • manifest his Likeness into the community beginning at home.

Carole Coltrane Whisnant

Carole is a true Carolina Southern Belle. She grew up on a tobacco farm near High PointNorth Carolina. Mom and Dad Coltrane lived in the old homeplace for over 60 years. Carole likes to say "she stood down at the end of the driveway for 12 years waiting to catch the school bus." (Don teases, "Why? Didn't it ever come?") Carole serves as Vice President and Office Manager for GraceRenewal Counseling and is a long-time fitness and nutrition enthusiast and avid walker.

  • Parenting Support, and
  • Faith Renewal

through in-office counseling (since 2005) and now primarily (since May 2025) through the Online Institute for Studies in Grace Concepts (videos).

The focus of GraceRenewal is to support counselees specifically for learning how to

  • read the Scripture in order to
  • hear the Holy Spirit
    • communicate Truth, especially concerning God's Love and Care for them and
    • call them to
      • trust Christ, his Blood/Death on the cross in order to secure their Eternal Life (Justification) and
      • receive his Resurrected Life to a fuller measure each day during Quiet Time Worship (per Ephesians 3:19, 4:13, Philippians 3:10, and Revelation 3:20) in order to

What to Expect (In-Office)

While we support the complex treatment methods sometimes needed to meet counseling needs, GraceRenewal Counseling does not use the term “therapy” or “psychotherapy” to define or represent the counseling we provide.

Counselees can expect our counseling to be
  • Scripture supported,
  • from a Grace theological (conservative / traditional Baptist) perspective,
  • appropriately informal and friendly,
  • for at least 1 or 2, two-hour sessions (also with as many additional sessions as needed in order to answer questions or provide clarification),
  • a teacher-student relationship, and
  • focused on identifying
  1. the Pain,
  2. the Problem (unmet needs at the root of the pain),
  3. God's Provisions for meeting those needs, and
  4. God's Plan for connecting to his Resources through which unmet needs are met.

GraceRenewal best provides support to counselees who

  • are born again,
  • confess their brokenness and need for counseling support,
  • identify GraceRenewal as a Support Resource for learning how to experience Christ per Ephesians 1:15-23 and 3:14-21,
  • have a Love for The Scripture, and
  • have spiritual ears to hear Truth per the words of Jesus, “You who have ears to hear, pay attention to what I say.”

Pets or young children should not be present during counseling sessions.

An Information Packet will be provided to take home for review.

Counselees are kindly asked to be punctual (better five minutes early than late).
